Everything You Need to Know About Male Incontinence

Adult male incontinence is much more common than you think. Adult incontinence affects over 25 million people in the U.S. and an estimated five million of those people are men. Between two and 15 percent of men ages 15 to 64 and five to 15 percent of men over 60 who live at home have incontinence. Homepro Medical has experience working with incontinence patients. We understand that an incontinence diagnosis can be scary and fill you with uncertainty about your everyday activities. We’re here to tell you everything you need to know about adult male incontinence, and give you some suggestions for products that can make dealing with incontinence much easier.

Types of male incontinence

Stress – Occurs when you laugh, sneeze, cough or exercise. Prostate surgery, obesity and certain medications can cause stress incontinence.

Urge – This is often referred to as overactive bladder. It involves having an urgent need to go to the bathroom that can result in leaks. Urge incontinence is caused by damage to bladder nerves, the nervous system or muscles. These things can occur from multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, stroke, bladder infections, bladder stones and as a result of certain medications.

Overflow – Overflow incontinence means not being able to empty your bladder properly, resulting in leaks and dribbling when your bladder is full. This is caused by weak bladder muscles, blockage of the urethra (prostate enlargement), tumors that obstruct urine and constipation.

Functional – Functional incontinence occurs when problems like arthritis or dementia prevent you from reaching the bathroom in time.

Reflex – This form of incontinence is when you feel no urge to go to the bathroom but you lose urine when your bladder uncontrollably contracts.

Mixed incontinence – A combination of forms of incontinence, usually stress and urge.

Temporary incontinence – Incontinence that can be cured easily, caused by a urinary tract infection, constipation, too much fluid intake or medicines.

Total incontinence – No bladder control at all, usually caused by fistula, a condition involving the skin and urinary tract.

Prostate issues are most often to blame

Prostate removal weakens the pelvic floor and nerves around the bladder, often leading to incontinence. About half of men experience heavy leakage after surgery, and one in five still have the issue a year or more later.

It’s normal to feel embarrassed, but there’s no need to!

If you’ve been diagnosed with incontinence, you might feel ashamed or embarrassed, and that’s completely normal. As a man, it can be difficult to avoid situations where leakage can occur, like heavy lifting or sports participation with friends. Only 18 percent of men even talk to their doctor about their incontinence issues, compared to 33 percent of women. While it is completely normal to feel embarrassed, there’s no reason to! Incontinence products designed for men can be discreet and easy to use. You can feel comfortable and confident, even when you’re doing tasks that normally cause leakage. Homepro Medical has a full line of incontinence products specifically for adult men. We offer adult absorbent briefs, boxers, under pads, gloves, ointments, and wet wipes.
