Finding Comfort and Function After Hip Surgery
We have previously touched on surgery recovery and the equipment we provide to help. One of the key surgeries we focus on is hip surgery. Why?
The Mayo Clinic found the number of hip surgeries doubled from 2000 to 2010. Not only that, but younger people are requiring hip surgery, meaning they, along with the aging baby boomer population, require the equipment and medical knowledge to know how to approach their recovery.
One of the best pieces of equipment for that is a hip chair. One of our past blog posts does a great job of detailing what a hip chair is and what the benefits of using one are. Here is a quick recap:
- Recent hip surgery recipients shouldn’t bend at the hip or strain it in order for it to heal correctly.
- Lower chairs force the hip to bend at greater than 90 degrees, which is not good for hips that have been recently operated on.
- Hip chairs are higher, meaning less bending and straining when sitting and standing up.
There are also a number of other items that can be used post-hip surgery to reduce strain while still maintaining independence.
- Seat Lift Chair– available in two, three or infinite-position models, seat lift chairs take the strain out of sitting down and standing.
- Reacher– a reacher allows you to get to items that would normally be out of reach without hurting yourself while promoting independence.
- Flexible Sock Aid– relieve the stress on your hip and keep from bending over while putting your socks on by yourself. Simply slip your sock over the end of the aid, place your foot inside and pull up to don your socks without straining your hip.
- Hip Surgery Cushion- designed with high-density foam, this cushion provides more comfort by taking pressure off your hip when sitting in any kind of chair. It also features a travel strap for easy transportation wherever you go. The added height the cushion provides to any seat means less bending and straining.
- Raised Toilet Seat- take the danger and pain out of using the bathroom during your recovery. The elevated seat creates less bending and stress on your hip and allows you to expend less effort on sitting down and standing up.
- Bath seat- stay safe and secure in the shower by sitting down instead of trying to do a balancing act on the slick shower floor.
- Walker- a walker offers much-needed support and stability as you try to be more active in your recovery. There is very little risk for strain since you control the distance covered with each step
- Canes– from standard and heavy duty canes to tri-canes and quad canes, these provide additional support and stability as you move around after your surgery.
- 7-Piece Hip Kit– this kit provides you with a few previously mentioned items along with a long-handle sponge for easier bathing, 24” shoehorn, 27” dressing stick, and two pairs of 24” elastic shoelaces, one in black and one in white.
The last thing you want after a surgery is to end up back in the hospital because of straining your repaired hip. Using the above items from Homepro Medical Supplies will help you avoid overexertion.
